Matariki market weekend, HUGE limited-edition prints and painting in progress
Auckland Zinefest
Find me and my GF (and thousands of others) at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki on Saturday 5 July. We’ll have a whole lot of zines on the table, including my Notes to Self, Drawings of Life at Home and the follow-up to last year’s Just Jokes, Just More Jokes, plus Imogen’s graphic-pattern newspaper Repeat Myself, Sports Illustrator and a new Yankees special edition. Edition Addition
A range of my limited-edition prints, including Thursday night at The Hollywood, The kitchen bench, and Gull Portage Rd, New Lynn have been added to the collection at endemicworld Ponsonby. Printed on enhanced matte paper using archival inks, these seven illustrated art prints are available in editions of 10, from low-key A4 to a supersized A0 (priced from $69 to $429). In the studio: Painting in progress
I’m working on lots of new paintings, continuing to draw from moments collected in my phone’s camera roll. This one is based on a photo I took in March on the Eurostar between Amsterdam and London: two Coke cans and Imogen’s laptop reflected in the train window. When I’m working with a detailed or (in this case) slightly disorienting image, I find it useful to turn the panel on its head and work upside down. This helps me to focus on what I actually see — colour, line direction, the scale of forms — rather than what I think I see. When I turn it right-side up again, mistakes quickly become apparent and are easier to correct. (Note: The light in my studio is something I’m learning to manage.)
